Cole's first fishing trip

On Thursday I took Cole on his first fishing trip. Joining us was my dad, Grandpa Flinders. Everyone I have talked to has said how bad fishing has been this summer because of all the run off and the lack of fish being stocked in the lakes. I knew I had to get Cole fishing soon, so we headed up to Rockport Reservoir because we heard that there was some success at this lake. After getting all the gear together, we picked up Grandpa and headed on our way. (After Grandma gave Cole his bag of treats for the trip, of course.) I stopped and picked Cole up a drink and bag of chips which I hoped would occupy him if fishing was slow. After arriving at the lake, we picked our spot, baited our hooks and cast them into the lake for the first time. Well fishing was very slow to say the least. There was a steady wind blowing that kept all of the bugs away so there were no fish jumping at all. Even the guys in the boats were not having much luck. Fortunately, we had plenty of rocks, wood and other items on shore that kept Cole occupied. We had a large cement irrigation cube right next to where we were fishing that Cole had fun crawling around in which kept him intrigued off-and-on for a long time. We finally had one fish hit my line, but unfortunately, he got off about halfway to the shore. As it started to get dark, Cole started to realize that his first fishing trip was not going to be successful. So Cole being Cole started to get dramatic with some of his comments being; “I don’t need to catch 3 or 4 fish, I only want to catch one.” “It has been a great day all day until right now. Now the day is no fun.” “I thought people said we would catch fish here. How come we can’t catch any fish. I think you are doing something wrong dad.” “I think we need to move to the other side of the lake. I bet they are catching fish over there grandpa.” “Whoever said we would catch fish here was wrong, and I’m going to tell them they don’t know anything about fishing.“ So seeing that Cole was starting to get upset, we decided to call it a night, after assuring him that we would find a better lake next time where we would catch some fish. On the way home I bought him a cheeseburger and he ate it while watching a movie on his Ipod which put him back into a good mood. Despite being shut out by the fish, we did have an enjoyable time fishing with grandpa and Cole is eager to try it again. Only this time I will need to make sure he catches some fish or I may not be able to get him to go fishing again for quite some time.
